RESEARCH INTEREST

I am very interested in corporate communications and the relationship between corporate governance, strategic management, transparency  and the need for ethical communications.  For example, one of my research interest explores how economic, social and political factors inform corporate communication objectives to meet the interest of both owners, or capital, and the managers. I am further interested in exploring the use of sound legal framework to promote ethical corporate governance in a way that bridges the rigid dichotomy divide, such as reconciling shareholders’ rights in a profit-centered model and how the use of corporate communication can be used as a management vehicle to restore sound corporate governance for organizations facing external pressures.

As to specific research skills, I'm well-versed in scientific communication research methods and conducting empirical literature review to draw accurate situation analyses of clients' campaign objectives. I worship scientific insights as well as extrapolating data as it provides a reliable benchmark to craft persuasive campaigns that are factually substantiated. Simply put, carefully-crafted communication or branding campaigns must take in consideration empirical insights and be grounded with either theoretical or research support to influence behavioral outcome. Those are the hallmarks of research communications, and those are the skills that I have been perfecting at Johns Hopkins.

With all that research knowledge, I have had the opportunity to design my own study to survey media's bias towards Latinos in LA, evaluating the study through the cultivation theory and agenda-setting framework to document the formation of attitudinal beliefs developed from heavy television exposure. This study was conducted under the guidance of my adjunct instructor Julian Teixeira who used to also teach at Georgetown University before joining the NATIONAL COUNSEL OF LA RAZA as Communications Director.

I'm happy to share the results of my findings. If you're interested, please reach out to me at sjohn227@jhu.edu
